Demetria Largie is an elementary educator and mother who teaches life skills through a culturally responsive approach. As a mother of two daughters and one son, she understands that children learn in several different ways. More importantly, Largie recognizes the importance of cultural representation in children’s literature.
Although she is a new author, learning about and responding to the needs of youth is nothing new for Largie. Before earning her bachelor’s degree from the University of South Florida, she spent over a decade serving children of diverse backgrounds through an after school program. Those experiences continued to impact her throughout her matriculation at USF. While studying children’s literature as a component of her undergraduate program, Largie noticed that the majority of the assigned works did not represent her family or cultural norms. She developed a fierce passion for ensuring that her children and future students could see themselves in the books they read.
Largie reasoned that she had the skills to one day write the stories she wished to see. After her oldest daughter expressed that she felt unmotivated to read, Largie’s vision was confirmed.
